You know that feeling you get when a song you love comes on the radio and your car instantly becomes a mega concert staring you?? It’s awesome right?!?! It always amazes me how the right song can completely turn your attitude around and make your day better. Whatever mood you are in or want to be in, there is a song for it. My dad is an awesome singer and I got to grow up watching him sing with different groups and at church. He taught me about the joy a song can bring you and the impact it can have on your life. This has helped me countless times and dealing with infertility issues has been no exception.
In August 2016 I had my first major surgery to remove fibroids and was in the hospital for 5 days. The first few days were great.. until they took away my special friend, aka –> the button connected to my morphine. Switching me to regular pain meds was just a rude thing to do! But anyways… while I was still recovering, one of my best friends Ashley sent me a playlist called Danae’s Feel Better Mix. And oh man did it live up to its title! (Thanks girl!!) It had an awesome mix of pump up, funny, classic, and girly songs that I really needed in my life at that moment. My mom took a video of me in the hospital bed listening to one of the songs while I made my teddy bear have a dance party on my food tray. Did I mention I was on a lot of pain meds???
Side note.. yes I am 30 years old and yes I have a teddy bear. His name is Cody. He is the greatest teddy bear of all time and if you met him you would understand.. Here’s a picture of the time he got too drunk on a cruise and we had to cut him off..
Okay moving on..
After the hospital, that playlist was my theme music in the car when I was on my way to anything related to our infertility journey. Its become a comfort that keeps my mind sane and in an upbeat mood which is such a hard thing to do.. especially when you are on a lot of hormone medications. Over time I have added to the playlist and created something that helps me with the ridiculousness that is my mood swings and anxiety. It makes me feel like I am more in control of myself when everything about this life altering situation is completely out of my hands. Its helped me so much that I thought I should share it because the concept can be applied to whatever difficult thing life has thrown at you. So I’m starting this series called Soul Food where I will post a song every week from the playlist and a short explanation of why its on there. I have a very wide variety of songs on this list so maybe I will introduce you to your next favorite one! Or you will think I have the worst taste in music and in that case.. go make your own playlist lol
To start this off right, here are 3 of my favorite songs that had to be included… enjoy! 🙂
- Scar Tissue – Red Hot Chili Peppers
- This is (and will always be) my favorite song of all time. A lot of people think its depressing but for me, its very uplifting and real. I think it describes how hard life can be and the determination it takes to keep going despite every obstacle that tries to knock you down. No one else might be able to see or understand what you have gone through but you have survived tough things before and you will again. Okay.. I’m done getting deep now lol Here’s a few lyrics from different parts of the song..
“Scar tissue that I wish you saw.. Sarcastic mister know it all..”
“Autumn’s sweet we call it fall.. I’ll make it to the moon if I have to crawl..”
- Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic – Sting & The Police
- This one is a classic and has special meaning for me. This is mine and my mommy’s song! One day when I was younger, this came on the radio right before we had to get out of the car at home so we quickly ran inside, turned it up as loud as we could, and had a dance party together in the living room! This was when my love of living room dance parties began and it makes me smile every time I hear it. Its still one of the first songs we put on in the car when we are together. If you want a feel good song that will make you happy then crank this one up!
“Every little thing she does is magic.. Everything she do just turns me on..”
“Even though my life before was tragic.. Now I know my love for her goes on..”
- Oops I Did It Again – Britney Spears
- This one is just for fun! I was in my teens when she was becoming super famous so of course she’s included on here! This is one of my favorite songs by her not only because its catchy but its just a really fun song to listen to. It has this random dialogue in the middle of the song about some dude getting the necklace from titanic for her and it makes me laugh every time! I mean yes.. its absolutely ridiculous but SO much fun to sing along to. And seriously.. who else could have pulled off a full body red leather catsuit in a music video?? No one that’s who!
“Britney, before you go, there’s something I want you to have..”
“Oh, it’s beautiful, but wait a minute, isn’t this..?” “Yeah, yes it is..”
“But I thought the old lady dropped it into the ocean in the end..”
“Well baby, I went down and got it for you..”
“Aww, you shouldn’t have..”
Hooray for comments!
